A couple years ago, our old dog was no longer able to keep the predators off our farm. After a bit of searching, we found our puppy, Finley, a Shepherd-Akita cross. He has turned out to be a very loyal dog and amazing with the farm animals—including sheep and chickens—and all ages of children as well. Here at the farm he is mostly seen basking in the sun—but when a bear or wolf encroaches on his territory he is formidable and tenacious!
We decided to keep him intact in order to have the option of propagating his amazing good looks and health, calm and pleasing disposition, and working-dog traits. Then, when he was only just over a year old, our son found and bought a puppy and named her Margo.
Finley
Margo is also a Shepherd cross. She is very sweet, smart and so eager to please—which has therefore made her easy to train. She has proven to be a very good, attentive mother for each of her litters. She’s great with the farm animals and children of all ages, while also being a vigilant watchdog.
Having kept in touch with puppy owners from our first couple of litters, we've been delighted to receive snapshots of their development through photos and feedback. As pictured, they tend to look (and behave, from what we’ve heard) very similar to various working dogs, like shepherds, and they have the trusty health and vigour of the crossed breeds found in our northern communities. This is why we decided to name this developing breed “Canadian Shepherds."
